Africa Wildlife Safari - The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire

Tanzania Wildlife Safari

This is the African wildlife safari that dreams are made of!

We have sought out a place where the influence of human life has not impacted the wildlife, a place where you can experience a safari in open space with less than a hundred people, in a place larger than the United States Yellowstone National Park.

A place that invites you to explore as you choose. Local tribal members take you by foot and safari vehicle on adventures by day. Evenings are set aside for magical sundowners and nights are reserved for elegant dinner service with both old and new-found friends.

Our exclusive accommodations are unique and specifically designed to put you in the heart of the wildlife that Tanzania has become famous for. In some locations the elephants are known to saunter right through our camp – can’t get much closer than this!

Join Walking Connection co-founder, JoAnn Taylor with Kitty Nielsen (#sistersonsafari) on this hosted and guided small group tour that includes the magic of the Serengeti, the allure of the Ngorongoro Crater and the excitement of the great elephant herds of Tarangire.

Lake Duluti Lodge

Exclusive - Exquisite - Exceptional - The perfect place to recharge after a long flight. Lake Duluti Lodge is made up of 18 spacious contemporary African styled romantic chalets ideally positioned for maximum privacy and views.  Inside a thirty acre active coffee farm it is located in a safe and exclusive area on the outskirts of Arusha. All chalets are positioned to face the coffee farm and each has a private deck with an amazing view of the ancient indigenous trees found within the farm. The lodge has been designed in a way that you will feel like you are right at home.

Gene and Jo Ann Taylor, co-founders of the Walking Connection, first visited Arusha in the 90’s and have enjoyed their stays ever since. As a gateway to sub-Saharan Africa, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti, it’s a great place to start your safari adventure.

Day 1– Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport – Arusha

Kuro Tarangire Camp

After a leisurely breakfast we head to Tarangire National Park via custom fitted 4 x 4 vehicles. Welcome to the Great expanses of elephant country!

The Tarangire bush is scattered with the sculptural silhouette of baobab trees. With a rich and varied habitat of grassy swamps, dense woodland, tall grass and the snaking Tarangire River it makes it the perfect home for a plethora of animals. Predator and prey alike we will be in search of prides of lion and the allusive leopard.

For 3 nights we will be treated to an exclusive stay at Kuro Tarangire. Set amid a grove of Acacia and Kigelia trees not far from the banks of the Tarangire - often a dry, sandy course meandering through this quiet area of the park. The area sees the rhythmic movement of wildlife as it traverses the park from the hills in the west to the swamps on the eastern side, and between the north and the south along the river line. Elephants often pass right through the camp that we can view from the sweet comfort of our sun-slatted living space.

By day we will travel out into big country. This means waiting as elephant families cross the track, slowly weaving along riverbanks looking for lions, watching leopard asleep in giant baobabs, and scanning the great swathes of elephant grass for big herds of buffalo…

For those that would like to venture on foot, we’ve special permission to walk in this park, a total privilege for those seeking a greater connection with the wild.  A striking quality of the African bush is the soundtrack: a cacophony of trills, hoots, snorts and rumbles; this amplifies when walking quietly through the bush, in the hope of seeing game up close.

One evening we venture out on a drive after sunset and uncover the night creatures of the park. Often the first sign that something is out there, is a pair of eyes shining in the dark; it could be anything: a porcupine, a zorilla, a hyena loping home. This time too is when you learn how quietly an elephant treads…

We will experience this place in a way that harmonizes with the natural tempo quietly nestled in this magical corner of Tarangire.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Accommodation: Kuro Tarangire - 3 nights

Days 2, 3 & 4 – Tarangire National Park

Ngorongoro Crater & Highlands

As we head to the highlands we have a full day of adventure along the way. Travel on through the rich Karatu farm country reaching the forest that welcome you to the highlands of Ngorongoro Conservation Area.  Catch your first glimpse of the crater as we make our way to the beautifully constructed and inspired camp.

Our home for two nights sits on a remote spot on the Northwestern edge of the Crater rim, miles from any other lodge. Accessed only by way of a private road that follows the contours of the rim, even the drive to get there in is breathtaking, with "take your breath away" views to the Crater floor beneath.

Entamanu Ngorongoro (meaning ‘circle' in Maa) is the only place in the world where you can enjoy views into both the Crater and the Serengeti. Our camp is uniquely off the beaten track but right on the Crater rim, offering an unspoiled, unparalleled wildlife experience of the Crater, and the land and culture that

surrounds it.

The Ngorongoro Crater is still a lambent lost world of wildlife, giving us flashes of how the first humans must have experienced it. As the sun rises over the perfect bowl of the Crater we will descend for a morning game drive onto the caldera’s floor where over 25,000 wild creatures call home.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Accommodation: Entamanu Ngorongoro - 2 nights

Day 5 & 6

Lamai Serengeti

The Tanzanian government chose a handful of responsible companies to build small permanent lodges in the remote far northern sector of the Serengeti National Park. Our partner hosts were offered this prime site. Lamai Serengeti sits tucked among the rocks of the iconic Kogakuria Kopje in the northern Serengeti. There are panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and it’s just a few miles from where the wildebeest cross the Mara River.

Each of the exclusive rooms are designed to fit into the complex geometry of the kopje (rock formations) and to make the most of this sensational location, its views and its natural space and light. All the rooms have their own spacious verandas and en-suite bathrooms with running hot and cold water. The lodge has a separate bar and dining area, with adjoining library and map room and a natural rock swimming pool.

We’ll explore by 4-WD safari vehicles to experience the intricacies of the area, both south of the hippo filled Mara River and (river permitting) to the north, where it is your option to get out for a walking safari.

And of course with a location like this, one of the best ways to take in the Serengeti is literally from the expansive veranda of your room, tucked away in among the red rocks of the kopje.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Days 7, 8 & 9
