Why
we are going to Todos Santos!
Sometimes
you've just got to get away to some place "non touristy"
where you can have all the unspoiled beach that you could ever
want to walk! We have been introduced to a special place in
the Mexican Baja by Sergio & Bryan
Jauregui owners of Los Colibris and
a local adventure tour company.
Sergio and Bryan came to Phoenix this spring to meet with us
and tell us about Todos Santos and in the short amount of time
we spent with them, we knew we had to go! Bryan is an American
from Louisana and I was curious what originally drew her and
Sergio to this place. So I asked her if she would share with
us what her inspiration was, and here is her story.
Dear Friends of
Walking Connection,
I first came to Baja a decade
ago on vacation with my two older sisters. We had this really
funny, cute and very knowledgeable Mexican guide named Sergio,
and my sister Blair immediately decided that Sergio and I needed
to get married. She therefore spent our entire week in Baja
working to this end; at our wedding Sergio and I presented her
with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Sales!
Sergio and I visited Todos Santos a lot during
our courtship and really loved the charm and creativity of the
town, as well as the stunning natural beauty of the area. When
it came time to choose our spot on the planet, we realized there
was really no other place we wanted to be. In 2002 we bought
the property that Walking Connection guests will be staying
at, and have delighted in sharing our home and home town with
visitors to the area over the years. We got married on the beach
right in front of where our house now stands.
When I first moved to Baja I worried that I might be somewhat
cut-off from my family – what a silly thought! My family
and friends are incredibly drawn to Todos Santos and when they
visit we do all the fun things that we’re going to do
on the Walking Connection trip. When my older sisters visit
we love to go see Doña Ramona and her family in the mountains,
and we always visit Iker at Café Brown for a cooking
class and plenty of his famous margaritas! My younger brother
likes to visit with friends from his home in Beijing, and they
revel in the endless amounts of fresh, clean air and the amazing
juxtaposition of desert and water so unique to Baja that they
experience on the cliff walk and waterfall trek. My younger
sister is an artist in Philadelphia and she really enjoys all
the artists’ galleries in town and appreciates the amazing
quality of the air that has made Todos Santos
such a mecca for plein aire artists. My older brother simply
can’t get over the amazing, unspoiled beaches that stretch
on for miles and miles here. And my father? I can’t get
rid of him! There is great fishing in Todos Santos and he’s
down here with his fishing buddies every chance he gets. For
me, each morning that I wake up and look out over the lagoon,
the ocean and the palm oasis, I give thanks for the opportunity
to live in such a truly beautiful, unspoiled spot on the planet.
And having that cute Mexican next to me each day isn’t
so bad either!
Todos Santos has been designated as a Pueblo
Magico, or Magic Village, by the Mexican government, and it
really is a magical place. Sergio and I hope that you’ll
come visit and let us share with you the magic that led us here,
the magic that draws our friends and family (again and again!),
and the magic that makes the kind of memories you’ll treasure
for the years to come.
With warm Baja regards,
Bryan Jauregui
