The right shoes for your upcoming walking adventure are essential. We cannot stress enough how vital good-fitting footwear is to your safety, well-being, and enjoyment while you participate in this bucket list hike.

Over the years and on the trail, numerous people have suffered because of improper footwear, especially on long hikes with terrain changes and multiple days in a row. Your enjoyment throughout the 11 days of walking depends on you having comfortable feet. And that starts with wearing the proper footwear as you prepare to walk the Camino.

Start with Socks!

Your socks and shoes work together to keep your feet comfortable throughout training and on the trail.

Here are several factors to consider regarding socks:

  • Seems should be flat and have unobtrusive seems.

  • Snug fit but not constricting.

  • Avoid cotton. Cotton socks can trap moisture, softening the skin and making your feet susceptible to blisters.

  • If you prefer a padded sock, they should have a high-density weave. The fabric loops that make up the padding should be small and tight, making them less likely to flatten while walking which could alter how your shoes fit. This could also lead to blisters.

Trail Footwear

Please do not plan to break into new shoes or boots on this trip. Be sure your feet know your shoes and vice versa BEFORE you wear them on the Camino. Blisters and pressure points caused by new shoes/boots can ruin a hiking vacation. Also, a shoe that feels great for 5 miles may not feel as comfortable when you do longer mileage. The only way to find out is by wearing what you plan to wear on your trip on training walks.

Please keep in mind that there is NO “best brand” for socks or boots. A specific combination of socks and boots doesn't work well for everyone! The best shoe for you all depends on fit. How a shoe fits your foot can only be determined by trying them on. Even if it is a highly rated brand, that does not mean it will be your best option. Lightweight hikers or trail runners with good tread are recommended. We will likely get some rain, so waterproof shoes are a consideration to keep your feet dry. The ground could be wet and slippery.

TIPS to Consider for Selecting your Camino Footwear!

1) For walking multiple days in a row, a shoe with a firm last helps to avoid bruising on the bottom of your feet. You shouldn’t be able to feel rocks or stones through the soles. If you can, it is likely that after many miles on the trail, your feet will start hurting.

2) The bottom of your shoes should have good tread. For example, on day 6 of your Camino walk, the views of the Picos de Europa will be spectacular! The trail is a beautiful country road where we will walk downhill most of the day. That downhill incline is filled with loose rock and gravel. A good tread will help prevent slipping, which makes it easier to enjoy the fabulous views!

3) You should have approximately a thumbnail’s width from the tip of your longest toe to the end of the shoe and no slipping in the heel.

4) Wear the shoes you intend to bring on your training hikes to ensure they are comfortable.

Insider Advice

My experience from walking the Camino five times is that I have been most comfortable when I have brought two pairs of shoes to alternate. I bring one waterproof pair, either a low-top hiker or trail runner and a second pair of lightweight trail runners.
