New York City Walking Tour and Vacation
May 28– 31, 2010
"The City" - There's no other like it in the world!

Guest Itinerary

Friday, May 28 - Go to the TOP
Check in at your convenience at our historic midtown hotel just steps away from Grand Central Station. Gather in the late afternoon to meet your host, Jo Ann Taylor. Early evening stroll to a festive family style dinner. After dinner experience the amazing observation deck high above the heart of New York City at Top of the Rock - Rockefeller Center. (D)

Saturday, May 29 - Walk and then Eat Your Heart Out...
...then walk some more! A food tasting adventure into the past, present and future through two historic neighborhoods begins! Explore two old industrial areas that have evolved into the hottest new destinations in New York City. Discover gourmet "mom and pop" food shops, ethnic restaurants, boutique shopping, THE NEW "HIGHLINE" elevated outdoor park, and nightlife.

From Bleak to Chic - New York Neighborhoods In Transition!

The "NEW" Meatpacking District is an old industrial area in the Far West Village that is transforming rapidly into an area for ethnic restaurants, shopping boutiques, art galleries, night spots, and cutting edge hotels. There were originally over 100 meatpacking facilities serving restaurants and food shops throughout NY and now there are only 15. Find out how this neighborhood is coping with change while seeing it happen right before your eyes!

Chelsea Market is an enormous Wholesale/Retail Food complex that takes up an entire city block. In 1898 it was the original Nabisco Bakery where the Oreo Cookie was created. It now houses 12 of New York City's finest specialty food shops. As we stroll through Chelsea Market you will learn about its history, view original artwork and granite sculptors from local New York artists, and learn how it became the ultimate indoor food paradise. The Chelsea Market is also the home to the TV Food Network!

Delicious food specialties are served on the walking tour from:

•Amy's Breads - artesinal French-American bakery (Est. 1992)
•Ronny Brook Milk Bar - offshoot from the farm (Est. 1950)
•Sarabeth's Bakery - gourmet American bakery (Est. 1981)
•Lobster Place - high end wholesale / retail fish market (Est. 1974)
•Buon Italia - wholesale/retail Italian specialty food shop (Est. 1997)
•Chelsea Market Baskets - gourmet specialty food shop (Est. 1997)
•Eleni's - Classic American bakery (Est. 1985)
•Macelleria - Italian Steak House (Est. 2000)

The evening is yours to discover your own favorite restaurant or take in a Broadway Show.

Sunday, May 30 - Secret Gardens

Discover hidden parks and secret gardens with Gene and Jo Ann.
While walking in the city two years ago we came across a tranquil green space amidst all of the hustle and bustle. We walked the garden and sat and enjoyed the calm, a lush oasis in the heart of Greenwich Village.

If you know where to look, remarkable gardens welcome visitors in almost every nook and cranny of New York City. They're perched on rooftops, concealed behind sleek midtown facades, tucked inside venerable museums, and waiting behind gates you may have passed by a hundred times. Some are even hidden in plain sight - such as the beautiful architecture of Greenacre Park, the elegance of The Japan Society gardens and the "peace" garden referred to as Mary's Garden at Holy Trinity Church. You are invited to join us as we set out with one of our Brooklyn friends leading the way to make some new discoveries of beautiful places that you won't want to just walk by!

And the rest of the day is yours with even more options to choose from:

Walk the Brooklyn Bridge.

No trip to New York City is complete without visiting the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. Take a ferry to Liberty Island. Enjoy a stroll to view Lady Liberty, more than a monument - she is a beloved friend, and a living symbol of freedom to the world. Then spend time on your own at Ellis Island, the historic gateway to America, where millions of immigrants passed through between 1892 and 1955.

So Little Time, So Many Museums!

Sign on for a historic Walking Tour of Lower Manhattan including Ground Zero.

Hop On! During your free time you may want to hop on the red double decker bus with over 50 highlights throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. You can hop on and hop off and enjoy the sights at your leisure! (Optional - we'll help make your advance arrangements).

Early Evening Reception in a private suite at the Roosevelt Hotel hosted by Gene and Jo Ann Taylor with New York friends and family!

Monday, May 31 - A WALK IN THE PARK!

One more walk led by Gene & Jo Ann Taylor to show you one of the number one places to walk in the world, Central Park. More than just a green space, but an 843 acre oasis, we’ll walk along tree lined paths, lakes and open spaces. A favorite retreat, Central Park plays an essential role in the everyday lives of New Yorkers for escaping the fast pace of the surrounding city. When Central Park first opened in the winter of 1859 it was the first artificially landscaped park in the United States and now we will enjoy the beauty of this “park for the people”.

Depart for airport at your convenience.
