June 20: León
Morning walking tour of the downtown area.
For over 200 years, this city was the capital of Nicaragua until
it was changed to Managua in 1851. Along with Granada, its rival
city, it served as the country’s political, military,
cultural and religious center. The architecture in León
reflects the city’s colonial past, which is best represented
by its churches and houses. The Metropolitan Cathedral is considered
to be the most prominent colonial structure in all of Central
America. Overnight at El Covento. (B,L,D) (NG) (LG)
June 21: León / Masaya / Granada
Morning stop on the way to Granada at the Masaya National
Park to see an active volcano. Standing on the edge
of crater looking down into billowing clouds of smoke will give
you the unique opportunity to see the forces of Nature.
We will then continue on to the Masaya
Markets and Pueblos Blancos. This is considered to
be the center of Nicaraguan trade. Its colorful markets overflow
with woven hammocks, wood carvings, leather goods, the famous
hemp tapestries, embroidered blouses and many other unique crafts,
making it the best shopping destination in the country. Only
a few minutes away from Catarina, the towns of San Juan del
Oriente, Diria, Diriomo, are part of the “white villages”,
famous for their furniture, ceramic pottery, as well as pre-Columbian
mythical legends. Check in at Granada’s
most elegant hotel a 150-year-old renovated colonial home
decorated in the Spanish colonial style preserving the aura
of authenticity. Overnight at La Gran Francia.

June 22: Granada
Enjoy a walking tour of Granada on cobbled streets – thrown
back in time then topped off with a horse drawn carriage ride.
Very centrally located, this was the first city
founded in Nicaragua by the Spanish in 1524. Here, charming
colonial buildings, churches, and monuments in the Baroque style
alternate with those of the Renaissance. The city was also built
around a central plaza common to many Spanish cities in the
16th century. With a great showing of history and special charm,
Granada is a “must” when visiting Nicaragua
and we’ll be there.
A
boat will transport us through the Isletas, a beautiful archipelago
of volcanic origin in Lake Nicaragua made up
of 365 islands. Created by the eruption of Mombacho Volcano
eons ago, the Isletas are now covered by tropical vegetation,
and are also a home to many species of tropical birds. Overnight
at La Gran Francia. (B,L,D) (NG) (LG)

thousands of guns have been buried. Overnight at Hotel Real
