Guest Itinerary

(14) 15 January - Arrive Delhi
Upon arrival in Delhi we are transferred to the hotel for immediate check in.

Afternoon introduction of Old Delhi by bicycle rickshaw and of course by foot! Visit Raj Ghat, a simple memorial to Mahatma Gandhi and the Red Fort - overlooking the river Jamuna. The Fort was built during the years 1638 - 48 when the Mughal Empire was at its peak.

Enjoy a WALK around Jama Masjid, one of Asia’s largest mosques then stroll through Chandni Chowk a colorful market bustling with shops, craftsmen's workshops, hotels, mosques and temples. During this walk one would feel as if you have gone hundreds of years back in time – this part of Old Delhi looks as if it has been transported right out of the Middle ages.

WALKING CONNECTION CULTURAL HIGHLIGHT:
Most that travel globally, visit the usual historical and tourist sites in a country. But often come back with that empty feeling that they have not really felt the pulse or had their queries answered by meeting the people themselves, informally.

To overcome this, the Walking Connection has initiated an evening with an Indian family where over a typical dinner we can discuss and learn all about the history, traditions, hopes and aspirations of an emerging India.

Our hosts will be a retired general from the Indian Army and his family. They will welcome us into their home, a Colonial style heritage Bungalow amidst 4 acres of landscaped gardens - an oasis of peace and harmony.

16 January -Delhi to Agra

Travel to Agra, the city famous for being home to one of the Seven Wonders of the world-the Taj Mahal. The architectural splendor of the mausoleums, the fort, and the palaces is a vivid reminder of the opulence of the Mughal Empire. A pleasant town with a comparatively slow pace, Agra is known for its superb inlay work on marble and soapstone, carpets, gold thread embroidery and leather shoes.

This afternoon explore Agra Fort at one time the seat of Mughal rule and administration. The present structure owes it origins to Akbar who erected the walls, gates and first buildings. Visit the Hall of Public Audience and the Royal Pavillions.

Watch Henna application the staining of the nails, skin and hair, a favorite way of enhancing beauty amongst women in the Middle East. It is used as both a hair treatment as well as a dye to make decorative designs on the skin.

Walking Connection Highlight! (Our Children’s Global Village):
A special Walking Connection visit to the Mother Teresa Ashram (school).

IN TAYLOR STYLE: Your Room with a view at the Oberoi Amar Villas
Enjoy the luxury of your own private view of the greatest monument to love, the Taj Mahal. Built in a style inspired by Moorish and Mughal architecture, the resort is a splendid display of terraced lawns, fountains, reflection pools and pavilions with rich interiors that take you back to an era of Emperors and Princes.

17 January - Agra to Ranthambore

Wake up to a glorious sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal. Taking 22 years and 20,000 men to build, the white marble was quarried 200 miles away and transported to the site by a fleet of 1000 elephants. Though the Taj appears to be amazingly perfect from almost any angle, it is the close-up marble inlay work which is really astounding. You will be mesmerized by this outstanding piece of architecture.

We travel on to Ranthambore (Map) exploring Fatehpur Sikri on the way. The deserted red sandstone city was built by the Great Mughal Emperor Akbar as his capital and palace in the late 16th century. It was abandoned soon after it was built when the local wells went dry yet it remains today in much the same condition that it was over 300 years ago. It is complete with palaces and mosques and used to be a town larger than London when it was originally constructed. Now it is an extraordinary place to WALK with its buildings in near perfect condition.

WALKING CONNECTION HIGHLIGHT:
Then on to Ranthambore for our TIGER SAFARI. Ranthambore, famous for its tigers, was the private hunting grounds of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Among the most famous of their hunting parties was the one organized for Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1961. Here, more than in any other park or sanctuary in India, tigers are now encountered in broad daylight.

IN TAYLOR STYLE: Two exciting nights at Sher Bagh Luxury Tented camp. http://www.sherbagh.com/ (Note, this website is very difficult to access. You have to provide them the right to read your computor clipboard in order to see the flash presentation, which is excellent. It seems fairly harmless, but if you are uncomfortable with this, please just click "don't allow," and by pass this link.)

A forest friendly luxury tented camp, Sher Bagh is a perfect place for the ultimate in authentic Indian jungle camps. This is OUR kind of camping! The 12 tents with ensuite bathrooms and their own verandahs are arranged in a semi circle around a garden. The custom furniture for your ultimate comfort is handcrafted of rosewood and teak.

18 JAN RANTHAMBORE - Tiger Safari Morning and afternoon safaris to the park.
Tigers hunt openly in the daylight and in the 2002 census, 40 were recorded in the core area of the park. The park also has a large population of jackal, sambar, chital and nilgai. Ranthambore has sounders of wild boar. Indian hare and mongoose are sometimes seen on the edge of the water. The park has abundant birdlife including Bonelli's eagle, the crested eagle and the Great Indian horned

19 JAN RANTHAMBORE – JAIPUR (Photo Gallery) A Morning Safari
Departing for Jaipur after lunch, where the palaces and forts of yesteryear that were witness to royal processions and splendor are now living monuments, accepted quite naturally into the lifestyles of the people of the "pink city". Except for the busy traffic of bicycles, cars and buses, little seems to have changed. There is a timeless quality to Jaipur's bazaars and its people. With its historical past, Jaipur revives legends of the ancient Rajputs. The dresses of the women and the turbans of the men add color to this fascinating city.

WALKING CONNECTION HIGHLIGHT:
Visit a typical Rajasthani Village, CHOKI DHANI, where you will enjoy different flavors of Rajasthan. Guided WALKING tour of the spice markets with options to buy spices to bring home. Dinner here is a delight, with an opportunity to taste the local dishes and spices you have just shopped for in the market.

IN TAYLOR STYLE: Two evenings rest at Jai Mahal Palace
Set amidst 18 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, this incomparable Palace dates back to 1745 A.D. A masterpiece in the Indo Saracenic style of architecture, it blends spotlight-grabbing opulence with tantalizing comforts that transport guests to a world of Rajasthan magnificence.

20 JAN JAIPUR
After breakfast travel to the ancient capital of Amber to visit the fabulous Amber Fort, transfer to the fort by jeep. Stroll the sprawling complex of courtyards and halls which overlook the Moat Lake. One of the most fascinating rooms is the Sheesh Mahal (hall of mirrors) where a single lamplight is reflected in the many mirrors, lighting up the room.

In the afternoon enjoy the City Palace, an overwhelming complex of exquisite palaces, garden, and courtyards. WALK to the adjacent Jantar Mantar or Astromonical Observatory, which still makes accurate predictions today. Visit the palace of the Winds, an elaborate facade behind which the ladies of the court watched the daily goings on in the street below. It is extremely intricate in its pink sandstone carving.

WALKING CONNECTION HIGHLIGHT:
Guided WALK of chandpol and bazaars of Jaipur with local personal shopper. Find the best locations for shiny bangles, silver, colorful duvets made from saris, hand stitched eyelets. ***Learn the tricks of battering for the best price!

21 JAN Fly Jaipur - Udaipur
Morning flight to Udaipur – “the vision in white.” The City of Dawn is set on the edge of three lakes, and is a brilliant kaleidoscope of narrow lanes, gardens, lakes, palaces and temples.

After arrival we will journey to the 120 year old Monsoon Palace. Left unfinished on a hilltop, this palace was once a "Summer Resort" of the Maharaja Sajjan Singh. Being situated at the top of the hill, the Palace offers a panoramic overview of the "City of Lakes", Palaces and the surrounding countryside. The Palace had an ingenious way to collect rainwater for consumption all year around, which is why it is called Monsoon Palace.

WALKING CONNECTION HIGHLIGHT:
After enjoying the 360 degrees view from the Monsoon Palace, we will WALK downhill through the Sajjangarh Wildlife Sanctuary. This Sanctuary is situated at the hillside and is a perfect illustration of thickly wooded typical Indian jungle. The soothing experience will be quite refreshing. The walk on a well-defined path, allows a chance to introspect and truly feel nature. The pathway takes one through the tranquil settings of this "protected" jungle and is paradise for nature lovers - it is an opportunity to get away from the fast pace of life and enjoy the serenity of nature. The reward at the end will be the tranquil Badi Lake.

Evening Puppet Show - The Rajasthan Puppets are a part of the traditional folk art of Udaipur and are famous throughout the world.

Two evenings IN GRAND STYLE!
The Grand Laxmi Vilas Palace radiates with royal and regal charm of an earlier era. Built by His Highness Maharana Bhupal Singh in 1911, it overlooks the majestic Fateh Sagar Lake, and is surrounded by picturesque hills.

22 JAN Udaipur

Morning WALK enjoying the sights of Udaipur city, also known as the City of Sunrise. Begin with the City Palace built in 1725 of granite and marble with filligree balconies, ornate windows and craftsmanship in glass. The marble throne in the coronation room was last used in 1730. Visit the museums and the hall of public audiences, the private chambers of the royal ladies of the palace.

In the afternoon experience the hustle and bustle of the old market while WALKING amongst the spice, jewelry, meat and food shops.

SPECIAL EVENING with DINNER at Fateh Prakash Palace while the sun sets on the lake.

23 JAN Fly Udaipur to Delhi (If not extending your stay)

EXTEND YOUR STAY!

January 23 – 27, 2009

“In planning our adventure to India we perused many varied itineraries with lots of interesting options. When I came across Chhatra Sagar I knew we had found something different, a special place that I personally wanted to experience. This place not only caught my attention, but lit my imagination, my sense of adventure. A place now I dream of being in. All the reasons I like to travel. Can’t wait!” ---- Jo Ann Taylor (co-founder of the Walking Connection)

23 JAN Udaipur to Ranakpur – Chhatra Sagar

On our way to Chhatra Saga we will visit the Ranakpur Temples. The cluster of temples, made of intricately sculpted white marble come across as a marvelous feat of architecture. It would take anyone by surprise to learn that they were built in 1460, so well preserved and sparkling is the marble. The main temple is supported on 1,444 pillars – none of which are carved the same.

IN TAYLOR STYLE: Chhatra Sagar Tented Luxury Camp

Chhatra Sagar was built as a hunting lodge of the Nimaj Estate. Surrounded by lush green fields of wheat, mustard, cotton and chilies and vast grazing pastures, this hundred year old reservoir, with a periphery of about 10 kilometers, is an ideal destination for nature lovers and a perfect getaway from city life. Experience the hospitality and traditions of rural Rajasthan the way few other properties in India allow you to.

Located atop the reservoir with breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset over the Aravalli range, this luxury tented camp is surrounded by lush green fields and vast grazing pastures. The tents are hand-stitched, tastefully designed and well appointed, with private attached baths with tiled showers and marble vanities. Each tent has hot and cold running water, electricity and private sit-outs where one can enjoy watching wildlife as it approaches the reservoir.

Your host at the camp is the Nimaj Royal Family, whose sons will act as your private guides. During your stay, visit the agrarian community of the Seervi as well as the Gujjars, who rear sheep and goats for dairy products. In the evening, sit around the bonfire and listen to village folklore and enjoy a traditional Rajasthani meal cooked with farm fresh vegetables from the family kitchen. This is an ideal informal setting to experience the warm hospitality and traditional Rajasthani welcome that is unique to this region.

24 JAN Chhatra Sagar sights

Go for nature walks, watch the birds flock to the water, soak in the fresh air, sit around the bonfire and listen to old folk lore - or be more adventurous and take one of the many jeep safaris on offer. Accompanied by one of your hosts, wander on an enchanting tour of the village and farm, with its fields of wheat, mustard, cotton and chillies and vast grazing pastures, meet the villagers, and visit some of the local temples.

'Jal Tarang’ - A Magical Evening
Enjoy a magnificent view of Chhatra Sagar Dam and the Aravali ranges as you picnic like royalty relaxing on a charpoy’ under ‘Chauldari’ colorful tents. The setting sun behind the dam gives a golden glow to the lake before sinking behind the unique and rustic architecture of the dam. You can swim, do bird watching, angling and sip cocktails as you cruise in the shimmering backwaters of the lake. The platform hosting you gives an effect of a barge. Enjoy a barbeque dinner with marwari cuisine that once graced tables in the princely states, below the canopy of stars with glowing ‘Mashaals’ (Flaming torches) and bonfire.

25 JAN JODPHUR
WALKING CONNECTION CULTURAL HIGHLIGHT:

This afternoon proceed to Bishnoi Village for a great outdoor adventure & a taste of the culture. It’s an opportunity to enjoy Rajasthan's desert life, wildlife & beauty. The villages and the landscape around Bishnoi are absolutely untouched and its inhabitants live in a totally natural setting.
