Are you looking
for a unique vacation this summer? An experience that
combines rugged mountain wilderness with pampered relaxation
and exquisite food? An experience where you set your own pace
while learning about the environment as you explore? What about
interesting company? Looking to share stories of discovery with
like-minded people? You can do all of this and more. Heli-Hiking
caters to the rank beginner as well as the seasoned mountain
veteran. AND WE WILL BE THERE TO TAKE CARE OF ALL OF
THE DETAILS!
When the great explorer
and mapmaker David Thompson crossed the "Shining Mountains"
in 1806. he spied to the west an even more rigged range than
the "Rockies". These mountains, known as the
Bugaboos are 135 million years old. They have
been explored by the area's Native People in search of food
and fur, miners exploring for gold in the early 1900's.
The Bugaboos
got their name from a turn-of-the-20th-century gold hoax. The
name alone is in part responsible for their iconic stature in
the mountain world, though the credibility of this reputation
cannot be doubted when one considers the stream of legendary
climbers who, during the 1950s – 70s, sought first-ascents
on many of these peaks. There is probably no comparably magnificent
range with so few visitors in the whole of North America, if
not the world.
Your choice is only
on how hard or easy YOU want to hike! We can do anything
from a gentle, flower-rich hike, ideal for beginners, to a moderate
meadowy hike with brilliant blue lakes along the way up to a
peak, surrounded by awe-striking views of the Rockies to a sterling
outing that works up from the canyon to a series of plateaus
lavished with wildflowers and great views of peaks and glaciers.
And we are there all along the way to make sure that this is
the vacation of your dreams!
The Bugaboos
are a hiker's nirvana. Three examples of the roster of more
than 100 hikes:
Septet Traverse
- This lovely hike begins in a larch forest on a ridgeline and
weaves up and down through cirques and hanging valleys, each
with it own glacial lake, each with a brilliant, unique colour,
from azure to turquoise. Relatively distant views of the Bugaboo
Spires give them a new, imposing aspect.
Rockypoint Basin
- A pastoral, gloriously green hike in a large cirque with many
variations, including a full-day hike up to Grizzly Ridge for
massive views of the Spires .
Rooftop Ridge
- One of the best places to get a 360 degree view of the southern
Columbias , Bugaboo Spires, and the Rockies , Rooftop is a rocky,
above-timberline hike with a number of pickup points along its
length. From up here it's easy to make sense of the landforms
and their ancient shaping.
THE LODGE
- Newly renovated Bugaboo Lodge sits about 1600 metres (nearly
a mile) high, with 35 rooms with private baths, a wood and stone
bar-lounge, an expanded spa area with sauna, steam room, a games
room, a handy shop, and a new rooftop hot tub with an extraordinary
view. Unique to the Bugaboos, area manager Dave Cochrane has
compiled a small interpretive museum of maps, pictures, natural
history exhibits, and assorted fascinating Bugaboos memorabilia.
